An international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) is the highest qualifying credential of lactation providers and infant feeding. Becoming an IBCLC requires 95 hours of lactation specific education, 300 to 1,000 clinical hours depending on the pathway, and a passing score on a rigorous examination. To maintain certification, an IBCLC must complete dozens of hours of continuous education annually to renew certification every five years, and pass the examination every 10 years.
IBCLCs are trained to help with challenges like low milk supply, breastfeeding pain, and conditions like mastitis and/or plugged ducts. For babies who are struggling to latch or not gaining weight properly, IBCLC's can determine how to improve feeding sessions. The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners® (IBLCE®) was founded March 1985, and today is comprised of over 30,000 professionals in more than 100 countries.
In August 2012, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandated that new individual and employer-based health insurance plans cover breastfeeding support and supplies.
